Grand Masters Awards
06.10.10
By: Jack Snarr
To follow up on an announcement at the 2010 Marathon Awards Ceremony, congratulations go to the first two recipients of the Des Plaines Grand Master Award: Ed Hahn of Geneva, IL and Thomas Szyska of Mt. Prospect. So, on what basis were Ed and Thomas honored with these awards? First, we have defined Grand Masters as being paddlers of “pre-war” (WW II) vintage. Delicately phrased … if you don’t know the meaning of “pre-war”, you are not old enough to be eligible! Second, the two awardees are (a) that solo paddler whose finish percentile in his or her class is the highest finish percentile among all grand master solo paddlers, and (b) that paddler who with a partner of any age finished with a time at the highest percentile in his or her class of all dual paddlers with one a grand master. That is, Ed’s finish at the 58th percentile (fifth out of 12) in C1 was higher than any other solo grand master paddler; and Thomas’s finish in Men’s Touring at the 77.5 percentile (ninth out of 40 craft), was highest of any dual team with a grandmaster on board! We are delighted to recognize these accomplishments by two of our “more experienced” participants. With new winners added each year, will you be a 2011 Grand Master awardee?
